Where rising damp comes from

Water in the ground rises into the wall

Rising damp is not a leak and it is not condensation. It is groundwater moving upward through the fabric of the building, and it continues for as long as the wall is in contact with wet ground.

Cross-section of a villa standing in damp ground, with the water table below and arrows showing water rising through the soil into the wall
Groundwater rises through the soil and into the foundation, and the damage shows on the wall above.
  1. 01

    Water sits in the ground

Below the surface, the soil holds water. The top of that water is the water table, and it rises and falls with rainfall, irrigation and the season. In coastal and irrigated ground it often sits close to the surface.

  2. 02

    Masonry draws it upward

Brick, block, stone and mortar are porous. Where a foundation or a wall is in contact with wet ground, those pores pull water up into the structure against gravity, in the same way a paper towel draws water out of a saucer. That movement is called capillary action.

  3. 03

The rise stops where it evaporates

Water climbs until the rate at which it evaporates from the wall face matches the rate at which it is drawn up. It settles at a fairly level line, commonly around a metre above the floor, though the height varies with the wall and the conditions around it.

  4. 04

    The damage is left behind

The water carries dissolved salts up out of the ground with it. The water evaporates and the salts stay in the wall, which is why the plaster blows and crumbles, paint blisters, a tide mark stains the surface and skirtings and joinery decay.

Rising damp is one cause of a damp wall and not the only one. Condensation, a leaking pipe, a failed gutter and penetrating damp through an exposed wall leave similar marks. The signs below help separate them, and an advisor will confirm before you order.

Diagnosis first

Is it actually rising damp?

This matters more than which unit you buy. Rising damp, condensation and a leaking pipe can look similar on a wall and require completely different remedies. Only one of them is treated by an RDbox.

A brown tide mark running across a wall, with the plaster blown away above the skirting

A tide mark that stops

Rising damp climbs to a level and holds there, usually under about a metre, leaving a horizontal tide line. Damp that runs down from above, or sits in one isolated patch, is something else.

White salt crystals blooming out of the face of a damp plastered wall

Salts on the surface

Groundwater carries dissolved ground salts up with it. As the wall dries at the surface those salts are left behind as a white, fluffy bloom, and they keep returning after you wipe them off.

Plaster flaking away from the base of a damp wall

Blown plaster, rotting skirting

Plaster loses its key and crumbles at low level, paint blisters, wallpaper peels from the bottom edge, and timber skirting softens or rots where it meets the wall.

A moisture meter held against the base of a damp stone wall, reading 26.2 per cent

Worst at the base, all year

It does not come and go with the weather or with cooking and showering. Condensation clusters on cold surfaces and windows; rising damp sits at the bottom of the wall and stays.

If the moisture problem does not correspond to the signs of rising damp described above, please contact us before placing an order. Our team can help determine whether an RDbox system is suitable for your property.

A chrome bath mixer tap encrusted with hard white limescale, with the outlet partly blocked

A water problem, not a damp problem. RDbox Limescale treats it at the pipe.

A different problem

We also treat limescale

RDbox Limescale is a separate product from the rising-damp range above. It fits to your water line rather than to a wall, is sized by the diameter of your water main rather than by floor area, and clears limescale from pipework and connected equipment.

It does not treat rising damp, and none of the units above treat limescale.

The honest version

Damp is a building problem, not a decorating problem. Painting over it buys you one season.

Salt-contaminated plaster keeps failing until the water stops arriving.

How it works

Technology designed to address rising damp

Rising damp occurs when moisture from the ground moves upward through porous building materials by capillary action. RDbox technology is designed to act on this process and support the progressive reduction of moisture within affected walls.

  1. 01

    Water climbs the wall

Groundwater enters porous brick, block or stone below ground level and migrates upward by capillary action, carrying dissolved salts with it. Left alone it keeps rising until evaporation balances the climb.

  2. 02

The unit is mounted and powered

The RDbox is screwed to a suitable solid structural wall, two fixing holes, and plugged into a standard 100–240 V supply. No chemical injection, no replastering, no replumbing. Installation is a matter of minutes.

  3. 03

    A very-low-frequency signal is emitted

Microprocessor-controlled electro-physical signals travel through the building structure itself rather than through the air. Maximum published flux density is 0.5 µT.

  4. 04

    Capillary rise is opposed

The signal acts on water held in the porous material, opposing the climb so gravity can draw moisture back down toward the subsoil. The damp band recedes from the top down.

What it does not do

Being specific about the limits is how you tell a real specification from a sales pitch. Any of these means an RDbox is the wrong purchase.

  • It does not treat condensation. That is an air, ventilation and heating problem, a different fix entirely.
  • It does not fix an active leak. A failed pipe, a blocked gutter or a leaking tank has to be repaired first.
  • It does not work unpowered. Treatment continues only while the unit stays connected. This is not a one-off dose.
  • It does not remove salts already in your plaster. Heavily contaminated plaster usually needs replacing once the wall is dry.
  • It is not instant. Fired brick and concrete block typically take 3–4 months on Plus-class units; thick or difficult traditional walls can take substantially longer.
  • Duo's insect function does not replace timber treatment. Wood-boring insects or termites inside timber need conventional eradication first.

Results and drying times may vary depending on the construction of the building, wall materials, wall thickness, initial moisture levels, ventilation and environmental conditions. For optimum performance, the device must be installed and operated in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

RDbox Pro Connect installed on a wall and connected to a standard socket

A Pro Connect installed and running. The red LED confirms power; green confirms it is operating.

Pro Connect

Proof that the wall is drying

The hardest part of buying damp treatment is that you cannot see it working. Months pass and the wall looks much the same, because plaster dries last.

RDbox Pro Connect answers that with a measurement instead of a promise. A reader built into the unit measures the resistivity between two screws fixed in the wall and sends it over Bluetooth to the RDbox PRO app, which stores each reading. This allows the drying trend to be followed over time.

  • Objective readings, an integrated relative-moisture reader inside the unit, not a guess from a handheld meter held against the plaster.
  • A trend, not a snapshot, follow the drying curve over months and watch the wall actually come down.
  • Evidence for the file, useful when a landlord, a buyer, a bank or a facilities team wants proof the problem was dealt with.
  • Reads over Bluetooth, from the RDbox PRO app on iPhone or Android, when you are near the unit.

Bluetooth must be enabled and you need to be near the device for the app to read it.

RDbox PRO app

Read the wall from your phone

RDbox Pro Connect has a moisture reader built into the unit. It measures the resistivity between the two screws fixed in the wall and sends the reading over Bluetooth to the RDbox PRO app, where it is stored. This allows the drying trend to be followed over successive months.

That turns drying from something you are told into something you can check for yourself.

  • Objective resistivity readings taken at the wall, not a guess from a handheld meter held against the plaster.
  • Every reading is stored, so you build a drying history rather than a single snapshot.
  • Useful evidence when a landlord, buyer, bank or facilities team wants proof the problem was dealt with.

Evidence

The numbers you should ask any supplier for

Electronic damp treatment is a category with a lot of noise in it, and plenty of suppliers who will not put figures in writing. These are the ones that can be checked.

Is it safe to live with?

The unit works by emitting a very-low-frequency magnetic field, which is the first thing most people want reassurance about. Its maximum published flux density is 0.5 µT, set against the ICNIRP reference level for continuous public exposure at mains frequency.

400× below the international guideline for continuous public exposure

ICNIRP is the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, whose reference levels underpin European and wider international exposure guidance. Figures shown are the manufacturer's published maximum, ask us for the test report and we will send it.

Questions

The things people ask before ordering

Including the awkward ones. If yours is not here, ask an advisor directly.

Ask us directly
Electronic damp treatment has a mixed reputation. Why should I believe this works?

Fair question, and you should ask it. Independent assessments of electro-physical and electro-osmotic damp systems as a category are genuinely mixed, some studies report walls drying substantially, others report partial or no effect, and outcomes depend heavily on the building.

So we do not ask you to take the physics on trust. What we put in writing is commercial: a 30-year repair warranty on the unit, and on RDbox Plus, Pro Connect and Duo a drying guarantee with its conditions stated in writing. RDbox Pro Connect goes further and measures the moisture in your wall over time, so drying becomes something you read on a chart rather than something we assert. If you want the test reports and the warranty document before committing, ask and we will send them.

How long before my wall is dry?

On the Plus-class units, fired-brick and concrete-block walls are typically stated to dry in under four months. RDbox Comfort runs at roughly half the output and is stated at around eight to nine months. Very thick or difficult traditional walls can take substantially longer, published information cites up to about nine months in difficult cases.

Drying time depends on the wall material, its thickness, how it was built, how wet it is to begin with, and site conditions. Anyone who quotes a single number without asking about your wall is guessing.

What is the difference between Comfort, Plus and Pro Connect?

Plus is the core high-performance model and the reference for drying speed. Comfort is the economical version at roughly half the output, which is why it takes months longer to reach the same result. Pro Connect uses the same core electronics as Plus and adds a Bluetooth moisture reader plus a geomagnetic function published as improving efficiency by about 5%.

Duo is Plus-class drying combined with crawling-insect control.

Is it safe to have running in an occupied home?

The unit emits a very-low-frequency magnetic field with a maximum published flux density of 0.5 µT. For comparison, the ICNIRP 2010 reference level for continuous public exposure at mains frequency is 200 µT. The technology is stated as CE and FCC certified.

It draws under one watt, has no moving parts and no chemicals, and is designed to run permanently.

What happens if I unplug it?

Treatment stops. This is not a one-off dose or an injected barrier. The unit has to stay powered for the effect to continue. That is also why the running cost matters so little: under one watt, continuously.

My damp might be condensation or a leak. Will this fix it?

No, and we would rather tell you before you spend money. An RDbox treats rising damp specifically: groundwater migrating upward through porous material by capillary action.

Condensation is an air, ventilation and heating problem. A leaking pipe, tank, gutter or roof needs repairing. Penetrating damp coming laterally through a wall is different again. Send us photos and we will tell you honestly what we think you are looking at.

Do I need to replaster afterwards?

Often, yes. The unit deals with the water, but salts already carried into the plaster stay there and will keep attracting moisture and blowing the finish. Where plaster is heavily contaminated it usually needs replacing, after the wall has dried, not before.

How do I know which size to order?

Coverage is chosen from the treated ground-floor or basement area, not the total floor area of the building. Use the model finder above as a starting point, then confirm it with an advisor before ordering, an undersized unit is the most common and most expensive mistake in this category.

How long does delivery take?

Delivery is 2 to 3 weeks. The units are manufactured in the European Union and shipped to the United Arab Emirates, and we would rather state a realistic date than a short one. An advisor can confirm the current lead time for your model and size on WhatsApp.
